A Wedding in October

Fannie Koa and Jordan De Guzman have been very good friends in our cozy Filipino community (especially the eating part). They have been endearing to a lot of us that we thought of making this surprise video greeting. This was played during the reception of the unsuspecting newlyweds which of course produced a lot of smiles and some tears.

The wedding took place at the Church Our Lady of the Mountains in North Conway, New Hampshire during the peak of the fall season of 2006.

The background music for this video is "True" by Ryan Cabrera.

The Sagada Project: the Surgeons' Experience

Sagada is an idyllic community in the mountains of Luzon Island in the Philippines. The soft winds, lush flora, wonderful sites and the warm culture of its people has proven to sooth every visitors stay. The Department od Surgery of the Manila Adventist Medical Center spent their annual recreation activity at this serene place. This video is a mini-documentary that portrays the charm that Sagada brought to its lowland visitors from Manila.

Penitensya: A Tourist's Experience

In the province of Pampanga in the Philippines, flagellation (hurting onceself for religious discipline or public penance)has been annually practiced especially during the holyweek season. In here, flagellants triy to re-create the passion of Christ.

In the western world it is almost unheard that people go to this extent to cleanse and purify themselves for the Glory of God. A flagellant I was told is vowed to perform this ritual annually for 6 years and then is passed on to another member of the family. In the event that a flagellant is unable to fulfil his vow, if he goes to work abroad for instance, a close male relative will assume the burden of responsibility. Throughout this process, familial ties are strengthened, particularly in times of crisis, such as acute illness, or if a conflict between kin is resolved, or a debt of gratitude (utang na loob) repaid.

What is striking in this experience is the presence of the fiesta atmosphere among the crowd looking at the flagellant like a circus freakshow. Street vendors selling liquor proliferate the place including peddlers letting children bet on some gambling games. It adds to the confusion as to how Holyweek should be experienced: to be solemn or to be jubilant

Aguila Clan Reunions: A Bridge to our Future, A Link to Our Past

The Aguila Clan of San Jose Batangas in the Philippines has been holding reunions every weekend after the Easter of the year. It has served as a venue for getting together, checking out one another, helping and bonding as a family. Totalling to 1557 members spanning 7 generations, the clan through its reunions persists and continues to become a much awaited annual activity for the young once and the young ones.

The music fits the image content of this video. Performed by Carole King in Carnegie Hall in the early 70's the song entitled: Song of Long Ago figuratively narrates of the feeling experienced in reunions such as this. In this global world the Aguila Clan clearly and will continue to be a family serving as a "link to our past and the bridge to our future."

The Aguila Clan of San Jose Batangas in the Philippines has existed for 7 generations holding reunions and keeping ties within the family. This music video shows images of how the clan started and how it is functioning as a family inspite of its growing number.

The music entitled "Diwa ng Aguila" was composed by Fransisco "Bombit" Buencamino in the early 1980s. The Musical arrangement of this version was done by his son Emil Buencamino. This video was created by Leonardo Ona III.

Sa May Bintana

This tear jerker yet happy video was created for Debbie, my lifetime partner and loving mother of our son Rael. Deciding to accept the offer for a study grant was hard for her. It meant gettting away from her family, her source of strength.

Thanks to the internet, Debbie constantly keeps in touch through video and voice streaming. It has served as her window ("Bintana" in Filipino) to her family. This video, set to the music of Ryan Cayabyab, elevates the eagerness of one family member to keep in touch with another despite the distance that sets them apart.
